Polka Tilt, 1990, 11’ x 11’ x 9’
After several years of working with elegant, curvilinear shapes, I wanted to see what would happen when I restricted myself to a mundane, four-sided box form.
Surprisingly, each of the three sculptures in the series is quite lyrical and playful. I believe this is because I thought of the side plates as if they were made from tissue paper rather than steel. Of course, the polka dots add some fun.
In another, “Sheltered Sky”, I flipped the box on its side which both frames the vista and invites you into and through the piece.
With “Inner Space”, I offer a dynamic outer presentation contrasting with a sheltered, contemplative and quiet interior.
